Why Katt and I Opened Duffers (And What We're Trying to Build)

Someone approached us about the space on Park West Boulevard and asked if we'd consider putting in an indoor golf simulator club. It wasn't a bad idea. But Katt and I kept coming back to the same thing: this address had history. For years, it was home to Joey's Bag of Donuts — a place that had become a real part of the neighborhood. People knew it. They had routines built around it. It was the kind of spot that, once it's gone, you notice the absence.

We asked ourselves, "Not what could go here — but what should go here?" This corner of Park West had been a neighborhood institution. We thought it deserved to stay one. And honestly, we thought we were the right people to do it. Katt and I spent a lot of time thinking about what that actually meant. Not just opening a donut shop, but building something that fit — the neighborhood, the community, and us. The brand we landed on was coastal and casual, but with a real emphasis on quality. Not fancy. Not precious. Just genuinely good. That part mattered to us more than anything else.

Fresh. Whole. Made here. When we started figuring out how we wanted to make things, we kept arriving at the same principle: if we can make it ourselves, we should. Fresh ingredients. Whole ingredients. As little processed stuff as possible — no artificial preservatives, no dyes, none of the shortcuts that make food cheaper to produce but worse to eat. That means our donuts are made from scratch every single morning. It also means we fry in beef tallow — no seed oils, no shortcuts. We knew going in that this was the harder path. It's more labor. It's more expensive. It means our team is here early, every morning, making dough from scratch while most of the neighborhood is still asleep. We believed it was worth it. We still do.

What we want Duffers to become. We want to be what Joey's was — and then some. A place people build their mornings around. Where the staff knows your order. Where you can bring your kids on a Saturday and run into three people you know. Where the food is actually worth talking about, not just convenient. Mount Pleasant is a community that cares about quality. It cares about local businesses. It cares about places that feel real rather than imported. We built Duffers for that community — and we built it to last. Whether you're stopping in solo, feeding your office, or putting together group orders for a neighborhood event, this is the place we built for you. It's a harder way to run a donut shop. More expensive, more labor-intensive, more demanding every single morning. But it's the way we believe in.

Come be part of it. We're at 1118 Park West Blvd — the same corner that's been feeding this neighborhood for years. Open Monday through Friday from 6 to 11 AM, and Saturday and Sunday from 6 AM to 2 PM. Everything is made fresh that morning. We'd love to see you.
